What they are

An automated screen that lowers on a remote or a wall switch, and rolls away when you want the opening back.

A motorized retractable screen lives in a slim aluminum housing above the opening. Press a button and the mesh comes down inside side tracks, sealing the space against mosquitoes, no-see-ums, glare and blowing rain. Press it again and the screen disappears into the housing — no frame in the view, nothing to store, nothing to take down before a storm.

It is the right answer when you want the opening usable both ways: fully screened in the evening, completely open the rest of the time. A fixed screen enclosure cannot do that.

Choose what the screen has to do

The housing is the same. What changes is the fabric, and it changes a lot — how much sun it stops, how much view it keeps, how much abuse it takes.

Phifer 18/14 and 20/20 fiberglass

The standard, made in the USA. 18/14 is the common weave; 20/20 is tighter and stops no-see-ums, which matters near water. Carries Phifer’s own warranty.

Polyester screen

An upgrade over fiberglass: stronger, holds its shape better on wide openings and lasts longer under Florida sun. Perfect Screen, through our Sarasota supplier.

Sunscreen

Blocks a large share of solar heat and glare on west- and south-facing openings. The trade is view: it is denser than insect mesh.

Privacy screen — Florida Glass

Vinyl-laminated on one side. You see out, neighbors do not see in, and it sheds water and dirt. Common on lanais that face a walkway or a close lot line.

Pet screen

Heavier weave that stands up to dogs and cats pushing at it. Worth it on any opening a pet has access to.

Vinyl

Clear vinyl instead of mesh, when the goal is to block wind and rain rather than insects. Turns a lanai into a usable room on a cold or wet day.

What happens to a motorized screen in a storm?

You retract it. That is the practical advantage over a fixed enclosure: the screen rolls up into its housing and there is nothing left in the opening for the wind to push on. A fixed screen has to be cut out or ride the storm.

Retract it before any named storm, the same way you would bring in furniture.

What if the power goes out?

Systems can be specified with a manual override so the screen can be raised without power, and battery-backed motors are available. We size this to the opening and to how you plan to use it — tell us at the estimate.

How wide an opening can one screen cover?

It depends on the system and the mesh. Wide openings are where fabric choice starts to matter: polyester holds its shape across a span better than fiberglass. Very wide openings are usually done as two units side by side rather than one oversized screen, which is both more reliable and easier to service.

We measure on site before quoting anything.

Does a motorized screen need a permit?

It depends on the jurisdiction and on whether the install is structural. We pull whatever the county or city requires under our own license, CRC1334065, and meet the inspector. If someone offers to skip the permit, that becomes your problem when you sell the house.

What does a motorized retractable screen cost?

Every project is quoted individually — the opening width and height, the mesh, the control you want and how the housing has to be mounted all move the number. We measure on site rather than guessing over the phone, and the written estimate lists exactly what is included.

Projects up to $65,000 can be financed through Wisetack, subject to credit approval.

Can you add a motorized screen to an existing pool cage or lanai?

Usually yes. The most common version of this job is a lanai that is already screened overhead but open on one side, or an outdoor kitchen inside an existing cage. We look at what the housing can be anchored to and tell you honestly if the structure needs work first.
